Girya began playing chess at the age of six under the mentorship of her father, one of the leading chess trainers in her area. She rose steadily in the ranks and became a Women's International Master in 2009, and later a Woman's Grand Master in 2011, the title she held until she achieved the title of International Master (IM) in 2013.


Girya had numerous notable victories. A key achievement was in 2010, when she won the World U-20 Girls Championship in Poland. In 2012, she was part of the Russian Women's team that won the gold medal at the Women's Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey. Again in 2014, she was a key part of the Russian Women's team that won the gold medal at the Women's Chess Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway.


In the European Team Championships, Girya won three gold: Novi Sad 2011, Warsaw 2013, and Reykjavik 2015. She also won silver in the European Individual Women's Championship, Belgrade 2013, and bronze in Plovdiv 2014.


Additionally, Olga Girya is a five-time champion of the Russian women's team championship. She won the 72nd Russian women's chess championship in 2013, and she was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship in 2014 for her achievements in women's chess.


Girya also has a career in coaching, she has worked as a coach within the Sirius Educational Center in Sochi.
