Helgi Áss Grétarsson is an Icelandic chess grandmaster. He was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, on September 18, 1977. Grétarsson achieved the International Master title in 1994 and was awarded the Grandmaster title in 1997 by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
Throughout his chess career, Grétarsson participated in and won multiple competitions. At the World Chess Championship in 1999, he successfully reached the second round. He won the Icelandic Chess Championship twice, in 1998 and 2005. Grétarsson also competed in several Chess Olympiads, representing Iceland. His tournament successes extend internationally as well; he won the Politiken Cup in Denmark in 2004.
Grétarsson further distinguished himself by earning a law degree. After retiring from professional chess, he transitioned to a career in law. At present, he is a lawyer, working for a law firm in Reykjavik, Iceland.
