José Ángel Guerra Méndez is a Cuban chess Grandmaster (GM). He achieved the title in 1986.


Guerra Mendez participated in a significant number of chess tournaments both within and outside Cuba. He participated in Interzonal tournaments in Moscow in 1982 and Taxco in 1985. At the American Chess Championship, he finished third in 1978 while in 1979 and 1988 he ended up in fifth place. He also won silver during the 1979 World Junior Chess Championship.


The GM represented Cuba at various Chess Olympiads from 1978–1998. At the 24th Olympiad in Malta, he played on the 2nd reserve board, earning an individual bronze medal. He later represented his birth country in multiple Chess Olympiads, even becoming the best player at the 2nd board during the 28th Olympiad.


He has defeated prominent Chess Grandmasters such as Yuri Balashov and Rafael Vaganian.
