Though he learned to play chess at an early age, his serious training began only in 2008 with his new coach, International Master Alon Greenfeld from Israel. He had his first success at the under-14 World Youth Chess Championship in 2008. He narrowly missed the title but managed to win bronze.
In 2018, he led the Indian team at the 43rd Chess Olympiad and proceeded to win a historic bronze medal in the process. In 2020, he captained Team India to their first-ever gold medal at the Online Chess Olympiad. Apart from his tournament play, he is also an active streamer and posts on his YouTube channel.
