Ediz Gurel is a prominent Turkish-Australian chess player. In 2005, at only 10 years old, he became the Australian Under 12 champion, and the same year he was granted the FIDE Master title by the World Chess Federation. He followed this up by becoming Australian Junior (Under 18) champion in 2006 at 11 years old, making him the youngest ever to achieve this feat.

In 2008, Gurel became the youngest ever chess player to represent Australia in an Olympiad, doing so in Dresden, Germany. That year he also became a Candidate Master and was awarded the highest national title in Turkey, International Master. In 2009, he completed his International Master (IM) titles in Australia and New Zealand under the tutorship of his long-term trainer, International Grandmaster (GM) Darryl Johansen.

Gurel played for both Turkey and Australia in various international junior chess tournaments. He spent a year in Turkey on full chess scholarship sponsored by Is Bankasi and Turkish Chess Federation. His highest world junior ranking occurred in 2009 when he was ranked world number 4 in the Under 14 age group.

Subsequently, he completed his International Master (IM) and Grand Master (GM) titles and continued to maintain his rank as 2400+ FIDE player. He often represented Australia and Turkey in global events, playing either first or second reserve on the national teams. Gurel often participated and performed strongly in senior chess tournaments.

Additionally, Gurel holds a double major bachelor's degree in Finance and Management from The University of Melbourne. He also works in the finance industry and no longer actively competes in chess.
