Lev Gutman (born 26 September 1945 in Riga, Latvia) is a chess Grandmaster known for his work as an author and researcher. He achieved the Grandmaster title in 1986 and has since been living and playing chess in Germany. Gutman came in first at the Australian Open Chess Championship in 1988/89 and has won several chess tournaments across the globe. While studying during his Master's degree, he wrote a thesis on Aron Nimzowitsch, a leading chess master of his time. Besides his active career in chess, he has contributed to the theories of the Sicilian Defence and the French Defence in his chess books.
