Chess Master Biography
Chess Master Biography
Brewington Hardaway is an American chess grandmaster, born on April 22, 2009, and the first African-American player born in the United States to earn the title. He learned the game at four by watching his older sister practise, and at ten became the youngest African-American player to reach the USCF National Master title.
His International Master norms came in a single 2023 surge: the NY City Winter Invitational in January, victory at the Marshall Chess Club Winter Invitational in February, and the World Open in June, where his 6/9 included a win over grandmaster Illya Nyzhnyk. The Grandmaster title followed in 2025.
