Mark Leonard Hebden is a British chess player who holds the title of Grandmaster (GM). Born on 20th March, 1958 in Leicester, England, he is a regular competitor in the British Chess Championship and has won four international tournaments, such as the British Rapidplay Chess Championship in 1990 and 1995.


Hebden was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 1982, and the GM title in 1992. He won the British Rapidplay Championship twice, in the years 1990 and 1995. He has also performed admirably in international competitions, winning at Cappelle-la-Grande and the Eforie Tournament.


Despite his British origin and residency, he has played for Monaco in team events since 2006. Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation for his deep understanding of chess and his aggressive style of play. He also made significant contributions to chess opening theory, especially to the development of the English Opening.



In 2014, Hebden was awarded the President's Award for Services to Chess by the English Chess Federation for his efforts to promote and develop chess in the UK. Among his efforts included the organization and promotion of many chess tournaments, conferences, and chess-related events. He is also known for his work with young chess players, including teaching at schools and chess clubs. In addition to playing, he also works as a chess coach and writer for chess publications.
