Vlastimil Hort (born 12 January 1944) is a Czechoslovakian born German chess Grandmaster. His early success came in 1960 when he tied for first place in the Czechoslovak Championship. Joining the world’s elite players by the late 1960s, he participated in seven Interzonal tournaments, finishing as a world championship candidate in 1977 and 1978. Between 1960 and 2004, Hort represented Czechoslovakia, West Germany, and Germany Federation in twelve Chess Olympiads.


He was a prolific tournament player in the classical era and achieved notable successes at a series of Varna Zonal tournaments, finishing third in 1964, second in 1967, and winning in 1971. Hort became an International Grandmaster in 1965. From 1970 to 1986, he was part of Czechoslovakia and German teams that won a gold, two silver, and three bronze team medals.
