José's achievements include his triumph at the 2005 Andalusian Championship, bagging the Spanish Chess Championship for Under 20 State level in 2004, and winning the Spanish National Team Championship in 2005 as part of the Reverte Albox team. He tied for first place with Grandmaster Oleg Korneev in 2013 at the 35th Open Internacional Vicente Bonil tournament after scoring 7.5/9 points. He finished at fourth spot in the European U16 Chess Championship in 2001.

On a more international level, he represented Spain in four Chess Olympiads from 1998 to 2014, eight World Youth U16 Chess Olympiads from 1997 to 2003, and one Mitropa Cup for Spain B in 2005.
