Vyacheslav Ikonnikov is a Russian chess grandmaster, born in Votkinsk, Udmurtia, Russia on October 14, 1967. He has won numerous awards in international chess competitions. Notably, he gained the prestigious title of Grandmaster in 1993.


Ikonnikov completed his youth training at the Dvortsovaya Ploshchad, an important school for young chess players in Moscow. Initially, he was not among the top players in his age group in the USSR, but demonstrated immense growth in his skill level in later years.


Serving in the Soviet Army during 1986-1988, Ikonnikov worked with other chess enthusiasts in the military. After his service, his career in chess took flight and he participated in several tournaments in Poland and the Netherlands.


In the early 1990s Ikonnikov scored a series of significant victories. He won the St. Petersburg chess championship twice, in 1992 and 1993. Ikonnikov was a silver medalist in the 1994 Russian Chess Championship and also received silver in the 1994 Championship of the Armed Forces.


In 1997, he emerged victorious in the Petroff Memorial Tournament and later in 2002, he dominated at the St. Petersburg Rapid tournament. Ikonnikov also made multiple appearances at the NAO Chess Club tournaments in Cannes, France, where he achieved a remarkable victory in 2003.


In 2005, he received 1st place at the 24th International Chess Tournament in Benasque, Spain and in 2006, he won the Lesnoy Gorodok Tournament near Moscow.


In 2007, he took part in the European Individual Chess Championship and ranked 11th, his personal best. Ikonnikov has also represented Russia in multiple team tournaments.


Ikonnikov moved to the Netherlands and now competes under the Dutch flag. He works as a chess coach in The Hague, where he lives with his Dutch wife. He continues to participate in multiple tournaments around the world.
