He obtained his first significant success in chess at the age of 13, when he won the U16 Greek National Championship. Ioannidis' achievements are extensive and commendable, as in 1996 he won the U20 Greek National Championship and gained third place at the World Youth Chess Championship in Menorca, Spain. In the same year, he achieved fifth position in the U18 World Championship held in Las Palmas, Spain.

In 2006, he performed as the first board for the Thessaloniki Chess Club at the Greek Team Cup, leading his team to victory. In 2010 and 2011, Ioannidis won the traditional open tournament "Acropolis" organised by the Greek Chess Federation.

His career is not just limited to playing, as he is also known for his significant contribution to chess literature. He has authored two books, "The Tango Opening" in 2002 and "An Opening Repertoire for the Attacking Player" in 2010, both aimed at intermediate-advanced chess players.

Ioannidis has represented Greece in the Chess Olympiads on several occasions, most notably achieving an individual bronze medal in Elista, Kalmykia in 1998. His largest-ever rating, according to FIDE, was 2549, which he achieved in August 2015.
