Alexander Ivanov is a Russian-born American chess Grandmaster. He was born on May 1, 1956, in Omsk, Russia. Ivanov earned the International Master title in 1981 and the Grandmaster title in 1991. He moved to the US in 1988 and became a naturalized US citizen.


In Russia, Ivanov won the Leningrad Championship in 1986. In the US, he won multiple state championships in Massachusetts and New England. He also became the co-winner of the US Championship in 1995, and came in second place in 1998.


Ivanov experienced considerable success at various chess competitions around the world. He won the 1993 New England Open, the 1999 Stratton Mountain International, and the 2001 Cannes Open. Additionally, he tied for first at the 2001 North American Open in Las Vegas, and for second at the 2006 World Open in Philadelphia.


He also represented the US in numerous team competitions. In 1990, he played for the US team in the World Team Chess Championship, finishing in 15th place. He also played at the Chess Olympiads of 1992, 1996, and 2000. In 2007, he participated in the FIDE World Cup but did not progress beyond the first round.
