Kjartansson has won several major chess tournaments including the Icelandic Chess Championship in 1989, 2009, and 2013, and the Reykjavík Open in 1988. He also represented Iceland in the Chess Olympiads several times such as 1992, from 2006 to 2014, and in 2018.
