Yona Kosashvili is an Israeli chess International Grandmaster (IGM), a title he was awarded in 1999. Born in Georgia on January 19, 1970, he moved to Israel in 1990 and competed for his adopted country. Kosashvili is also an accomplished medical doctor, having studied medicine at Tel Aviv University, and currently practices in the field of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology.
As a chess player, Kosashvili has had a notable career. He was an active player between the years 1988 and 2006 and won the Israeli Chess Championship twice - first in 1996, and then again in 2003. He also participated in several Chess Olympiads representing Israel and was a part of the team that clinched the silver medal in the 2008 Chess Olympiad.
Yona Kosashvili is notably married to another Grandmaster, Sofia Polgar.
