Alexander Anatolyevich Kovchan (born June 8, 1976) is a Ukrainian chess grandmaster, coach, and author. He earned his Grandmaster title in 1998 and has been a successful competitor in a number of elite tournaments worldwide.


He was born in Kremenchuk, a city in central Ukraine, and began showing his talent in chess from an early age. He stood behind the USSR youth team at the World Chess Championship and won his first international tournament in Warsaw, as well as the Ukrainian championship in 1999.


Kovchan has represented Ukraine at multiple international tournaments. He participated in the World Chess Championships in 1999 and 2007, and represented Ukraine in the Chess Olympiads in 2016. He also participated in the European Team Chess Championships in 2011 and 2019.


As a coach, Kovchan has trained chess players of various skill levels, from beginners to top-tier professionals. He was a trainer for the national team of Ukraine at the Chess Olympiads in 2016 and 2018. He was also a coach for the national team of Ukraine at the European Team Chess Championships in 2011 and 2019.


In addition to his achievements as a player and a coach, Kovchan has written several books on chess, including one where he shares his own experiences, observations and knowledge of the game. His books aim to help readers improve their understanding and mastery of chess.


Throughout his career, Kovchan has exhibited an impressive mastery of chess, and has contributed significantly to the popularization and development of chess in Ukraine.
