Lau's early professional career involved playing for Dinslaken and Solingen chess clubs in regional championships. After obtaining his GM title, he started participating in national and international games. He competed in the Chess Bundesliga for many seasons, leading his team to victory in the 1990/91 season. Lau also represented Germany in six Chess Olympiads (1982–1992) and at the European Team Chess Championship in 1992.
