Moulthun Ly is a prominent Australian chess Grandmaster and one of the leading players in the country. Born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 1991, he moved to Australia the same year. He started playing chess at the age of 8.
Ly achieved his first significant success in 2006 when he became the U-16 World Chess Olympiad champion. In 2012, he achieved his International Master title and secured his Grandmaster title by 2017. He is the first Vietnamese-born Australian to hold the Grandmaster title.
Ly also participated in the World Cups in 2015 and 2017 and has performed notably in several international tournaments. He represented Australia at the Chess Olympiads from 2008-2018. He wrote a book, "Practical Chess Puzzles: 600 Positions to Improve Your Calculation and Judgement" published in 2020. For his academic pursuits, he completed a degree in pharmacy at the University of Queensland.
