Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is an Azerbaijani chess grandmaster, or a world-class chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster in 2002. Born on April 12, 1985, Mamedyarov is a three-time European Team Chess Champion and two-time World Junior Champion. He also won the World Team Chess Championships with Azerbaijan in 2009, 2013, and 2017.
Throughout his career, he has achieved several notable victories. He won the 2018 Biel Chess Festival by a 1.5 point margin and jointly won the FIDE Grand Prix 2012–13, which qualified him for the Candidates Tournament of the 2014 World Chess Championship.
His sister, Zeinab Mamedjarova, and his brother, Turaj Mamedyarov, are Woman Grandmaster and FIDE master, respectively. He's also married to Woman Grandmaster, WGM Khayala Abdulla.
