Zaur Mammadov is a prominent Azerbaijani chess player that gained notoriety in the world of chess internationally. He was one of the inaugural Grandmasters of his country, a title which he earned in 1977.


His prowess extended in both national and international chess competitions. At national level, he clinched the Azerbaijan championships twice in 1974 and 1980. Internationally, he remained successful by participating in events like the World Chess Championships, earning bronze in the semifinals of 1984 in Vilnius. He emerged victorious in several other international competitions, a testament to his honed skills.


Zaur Mammadov retired from professional chess in 1997, marking an end to a great career spanning numerous decades. Despite his retirement, he continued to contribute to the chess world in his capacity as Deputy Director of the Republican Chess Centre in Baku and was also an academic in Computer Science. His contributions and accomplishments have been recognized as he received awards for his services to sport in Azerbaijan and honours upon his death in 2011.
