Nikola Mitkov is a chess Grandmaster (GM) from North Macedonia. Born on July 24, 1971, in Skopje, North Macedonia, Mitkov became a Grandmaster in 2009. He is the first Macedonian chess player to earn the title of GM.
He began his professional career in 1992, earning the chess master title in 1995, followed by the International Master title in 1997. He was awarded the GM title after winning the 2009 U.S. Chess Championship.
Mitkov has competed in various national and international chess tournaments. He won the 1996 European Junior Chess Championship and the 1997 Skopje Open tournament. He also represented North Macedonia in the 1998, 2000, and 2002 Chess Olympiads.
Mitkov has had an international chess career, playing for various clubs worldwide, including Belgium, France, and The Netherlands. He was the chess coach of the Saint Louis University team. He later moved to the United States and in 2006 opened a chess school in Chicago, Illinois.
