Alija Muratović is a Bosnian chess grandmaster. He was born on April 23, 1951 in Sarajevo, former Yugoslavia.
Muratović became a chess player with a higher ranking in 1974 and received an International Master title in 1977. In 1989, he was crowned as the chess grandmaster. He won two chess championship games representing Bosnia and Herzegovina, once in 1981 and then in 1982.
Early in his career, Muratović won the international tournament in Vrnjačka Banja, ahead of Borislav Ivkov in 1970. Other notable wins throughout his career include beating Nigel Short and Jan Timman.
Muratović's greatest accomplishment, however, was his successful move to become a chess grandmaster. This is the highest title achievable in the world of chess; it is awarded by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) to players who have demonstrated exceptional ability in international play.
