Iivo Nei is an Estonian chess player who achieved the status of International Master (IM) in 1964 and International Grandmaster (IGM) in 2001. Born on January 31, 1931, he was relatively unknown on the international chess scene until he tied for the second place at an international chess tournament in Pärnu in 1960. Nei primarily devoted himself to coaching in the 1970s, training notable chess players like Paul Keres and Jaan Ehlvest. Despite his coaching commitments, he has still managed to win the Estonian Championship in 1993, 1995, 1998 and 1999. He has also contributed to the field of chess studies. Nei's best performance to date has been against Grandmaster Bent Larsen, whom he beat twice.
