Nikolai Ninov was a Bulgarian chess player who earned his Grandmaster title status in 1975. He was born on November 21, 1949, in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria and passed away on February 18, 2018. Throughout his career, he won many chess tournaments, including ones in Varna, Bulgaria, London, England, and Manila, the Philippines.


Ninov began to actively compete in chess tournaments in the late 1960s, though his first major victory came in 1971 when he won the Student Championship of Bulgaria. His notable achievements include winning the Albena tournament in 1972 and ranking second in the Sofia tournament of the same year.


From 1973 to 1974, Ninov competed in two Chess Olympiads, representing Bulgaria. He achieved 50% success in the two appearances he made. In 1975, Ninov achieved his Grandmaster title after obtaining an International Master title previously.


He made other contributions to the chess world, such as being involved in the organisation of the Veliko Tarnovo Memorial tournament. After retiring, he worked as a chess coach, mentoring the Bulgarian national teams. He also wrote about chess and worked as an editor for the text and problem sections of a number of chess publications.
