Federico Pérez Ponsa is an Argentine chess grandmaster (GM), currently included in the top 20 of his country's ranking. He was awarded the GM title by FIDE in 2013, becoming the 30th Argentine player to achieve this honor. He gained recognition early on, winning the U-10 World Championship of Chess in Spain in 2005. He also won the Argentine Championship in 2017.
He has participated in a number of international tournaments including the Aeroflot Open in 2013, and the Chess World Cup in 2017 and 2019. At the 43rd Chess Olympiad in Georgia, Pérez Ponsa played board two for Argentina and scored 5.5 points out of 10.
Pérez Ponsa's playing style is known to be aggressive and creative. He excels particularly in opening the game, often employing the Sicilian Defence. He is assisted in his progression as a professional player by his coach Grandmaster Sandro Mareco.
