Michael Richter is a German chess Grandmaster (GM), born on September 29, 1963. He earned the Grandmaster title on November 6, 2002 and holds the title of International Master (IM) since 1988.


Richter began his chess career playing for SV Empor Berlin. He is also known for having played for teams such as SC Kreuzberg, Hertha BSC Chess and SG Bochum, amongst others. In Swiss Team Cup, he played for SG Winterthur and won Switzerland's team championships in 1999 and 2006. He has also competed in the Bundesliga, the highest German team chess league, where he played until 2016.


Richter has played in several German individual chess championships. In 1989, he came in 4th place in Bad Neuenahr, in 1991, he came in 3rd place in Bad Neuenahr, and in 1995 he finished in Lake Constance. In 2003, he won the operational championships of the German Chess Federation in Braunfels. Richter won first prize in the B tournament of the international tournament in Cienfuegos in 1986. In the same year, he was behind Tomas Oral in Sömmerda. He also finished first in Vienna in 1998.


As an author, Michael Richter has written articles for the "Schach-Echo" and the ChessBase website. He has also written several books on the French Defence.
