Mihail Saltaev is a Soviet-born Swiss chess Grandmaster.


He was born on April 13, 1962, in the former Soviet Union. Saltaev received his International Master title in 1988 and became Grandmaster in 1993. He competed in the FIDE World Championship of 2004 as well as the FIDE World Cup in 2005.


Saltaev has achieved notable successes in a number of chess tournaments. He won the Swiss Championship in 2001 and also the Challengers tournament at the Biel Chess Festival the same year. Furthermore, he won the Basel Championship in both 2002 and 2004, and came first or equal first in several competitions, such as Montecatini Terme 2005, Milan 2007 and Eforie Nord 2008.


Saltaev moved from the Soviet Union to Switzerland in 2000 and has been a Swiss citizen since 2004. He is known for his aggressive playing style, which is particularly effective in rapid and blitz games.
