Sankalp Gupta is an Indian chess player who became the 67th Grandmaster (GM) of India on October 30, 2020. Born on June 11, 2003, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, he began playing chess at the age of three under the tutelage of his father and had his early formal training at the city-based Nagpur Chess Academy under Swapnil Dhopade's guidance.
Gupta began his promising chess career by winning the Maharashtra State Under-7 chess championship in 2010. He then claimed the title at the Asian School Chess Championship in New Delhi in 2014. He achieved consecutive successes such as the Commonwealth Chess Championship in 2015 and the Asian Schools Chess Championship (Under 17 Category) in 2016.
In 2018, Gupta became an International Master (IM) by earning his third IM norm at the Paracin Open held in Serbia. In the same year, he represented India at the World Junior Chess Championship held in Turkey. In 2019, he won a gold medal at the 27th National Under 17 Chess Championship and got his first GM norm in Serbia.
Gupta's grandmaster norm came when he took 3rd place at the 1st Tetrasoft Hyderabad Marriott Grandmaster Chess Tournament in 2020. He achieved his third and final GM norm in the same tournament. He became the 67th Chess Grandmaster of India on October 30, 2020.
