Dražen Sermek is a Croatian- born Slovenian chess Grandmaster. He was born on December 22, 1969 in Osijek, Croatia, and later gained Slovenian citizenship in 2008. Known for being a successful chess player, he won the junior championship of Croatia twice, in 1987 and 1989.
In 1993, he became FIDE's International Master, and in the following year, he achieved the title of Grandmaster. In 1996, Sermek won the Vidmar Memorial, a very strong tournament. In 2007, he won the 16th Salona tournament, held near Split in Croatia. 2008 was a significant year for him when he debuted in the Olympiad, representing the Slovenian team.
Though Sermek has all the hallmarks of a strong chess player, he has not been notable in achieving major successes at the Olympiads, World or European championships. However, he is considered one of the leading Slovenian grandmasters. His aggressive and tactical style of play has earned him admiration from his fans and peers.
