S.P. Sethuraman is an Indian Grandmaster of chess recognised by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs). He was born on 25th February 1993 in Madras, Tamil Nadu. Sethuraman earned the Grandmaster title in 2011.
Key achievements in Sethuraman's career include winning the Asian U12 Chess Championship 2004 in Singapore and the World U16 Chess Championship 2009 held in Turkey. He won an individual gold medal in the U16 category at the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiads in 2008 and secured team silver, and an individual gold medal, in 2010.
In 2014, Sethuraman won the Indian National Premier Chess Championship. Subsequently, he also came first in the 2016 Asian Chess Championship in Uzbekistan.
In team events, he represented India in the World Team Chess Championship in 2017 and the Chess Olympiad in 2018, securing team silver medals in both events. After also winning the Aeroflot Open Blitz Chess Tournament in Moscow in 2018, he secured a spot for the Biel Grandmaster Tournament.
Sethuraman is coached by GM R.B. Ramesh of Chess Gurukul and was previously trained by Aaron, a former international chess player.
