Sergei Shipov is a Russian International Grandmaster of chess. Born on 17 April 1966, Shipov became a Grandmaster in 1991. He has competed in multiple international tournaments and his prime success was winning the Russian Championship in 1991. In later years, he turned his attention to chess training, journalism and online commentary.


As a coach, he has trained several noteworthy chess players like Alexandra Kosteniuk and Ian Nepomniachtchi. Known for his writing and presentation skills, Shipov has written a number of books on different chess topics, which are appreciated for their intelligent analytical approach. In 2014, he also began working for the website Crestbook, where he created a series of detailed online commentaries for high-profile games.


A great promoter of chess, Shipov has often appeared on television and radio shows, speaking about the intricacies and culture of the chess world. He has also produced a number of instructional videos on chess. Despite these other roles, he has remained an active player and continues to participate in a range of tournaments.
