Shyam Sundar M. is an Indian chess Grandmaster (GM). He was born on 27 February 1991 in India. His mother was his first teacher. He received the title of the International Master in 2008 and gained the Grandmaster title in 2013.
His first major success was winning the 3rd Parsvnath Open Chess Tournament, held in Delhi in 2005. Shyam won the 9th Asian Junior (Under-20) Chess Championship in 2012 and the 20th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival in 2013. In January 2019, he participated in the Tata Steel Challengers chess tournament, where he finished twelfth. He then competed in the Aeroflot Open in February 2019, where he finished eleventh.
He has been praised for his mental agility and strategic thinking. He describes his style of play as both aggressive and positional, balancing between daring attacks and careful planning. He is also known for his calm composure during high-pressure matches.
