Francesco Sonis is an Italian chess Grandmaster (International Grandmaster since 2019) who has achieved considerable success in his professional career in chess dating back to his early teenage years. Born in Alghero, Italy, on 7th May 1999, he was exposed to chess at a tender age of 5 and quickly grew fond of it.
Sonis initially participated in local tournaments and started making an impression at a national level by the age of 12, finishing third in the U12 Italian Championship. His success quickly transcended national borders as he started receiving recognition in influential chess tournaments from around the globe, attaining the International Master title in 2018 following a stellar run at the Llucmajor Open.
