Vasil Spasov is a Bulgarian chess Grandmaster and a former youth world champion. He was awarded the International Master title in 1990 and the Grandmaster title in 1994 by the International Chess Federation. He has been among the leading Bulgarian players since the early 1990s, represented his country in various international chess events, including several Chess Olympiads.


Spasov was born on March 17, 1971 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. He quickly rose to prominence in youth chess circles, becoming the Bulgarian U16 Champion in 1986, the World U16 Champion in 1987, and the European U20 Champion in 1990. His early successes helped him achieve his first grandmaster norm in 1990, at the age of 19.


Throughout his career, Spasov has achieved victories over many strong players and participated in prestigious events. Some of his notable achievements include winning the Zonal Tournament in Ptuj in 1995, which allowed him to compete in the Interzonal Tournament in 1996. He also won the Bulgarian Chess Championship in 2002. He has recorded victories over eminent players such as Gata Kamsky, Kiril Georgiev, and Loek Van Wely.


Vasil Spasov also publishes theoretical articles on chess and has contributed to the development of chess theory. He is recognized for his profound understanding of the game and is considered one of the most prominent Bulgarian grandmasters.
