Jon S. Speelman is a well-known British chess grandmaster, chess writer, and mathematician. Born in 1956, he has been a well-known figure in the world of chess since the late 1970s. His most significant achievement in the World Chess Championship came in 1989, when he qualified for Candidates Matches, which determined the world champion. Speelman has also coached other notable British chess players such as Michael Adams and Nigel Short. As a chess writer, he has authored several books and contributed regularly to The Observer and The Independent newspapers. His academic background is in mathematics, as he was awarded a degree in the subject from Worcester College, Oxford.
