Nikolaus Stanec is an Austrian chess player who was born on December 2, 1968 in Vienna. He became a National Master in 1986 and an FIDE Master in 1987. In 1990, Stanec was rewarded with the title of International Master. He was decorated with the Grandmaster title in 1998.


Stanec has taken part in many national and international tournaments. He has regularly competed in the Austrian State Championships, where he appeared first in 1995. In international tournaments, Stanec achieved notable success in 1995 and 1997 in Vienna. In the 1998 Austrian State Championship, he was placed second.


Stanec has also participated in several Chess Olympiads. He has regularly represented Austria since 1990. His best individual result was in 1992 in Manila, where he reached the 8th rank on the third board and won an individual silver medal.



Along with his chess career, Stanec had a professional career as a jail warden. He has worked in the Vienna-Josefstadt court prison for many years.
