Hannes Stefánsson is an Icelandic Chess Grandmaster and one of the most successful Icelandic chess players in recent history. He was born in 1972 in Reykjavík, Iceland. Stefánsson won the World Junior Chess Championship in 1993. He was also the Icelandic Champion multiple times, including but not limited to the years 1995, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2012, 2015, and 2019.


His advanced chess skills secured him a place on the Icelandic team in the Chess Olympiad, representing his country a total of eleven times between 1994 and 2014. Stefánsson's best individual result was when he scored 8½ points from 12 in the 2002 Olympiad.


Stefánsson is a prolific participant in chess competitions, regularly competing in both international events and local Icelandic tournaments. His level of play has earned him recognition from the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), the international chess federation, and he reached his peak world ranking of 42 in 2005.


Some of his notable tournament successes include winning the Reykjavik Open in 1996/97, Copenhagen's Politiken Cup in 2003, and the Hastings Masters in 2004/05.
