Jan Subelj is a Slovenian chess grandmaster. Born on April 9, 1982 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, he became a grandmaster (GM) in 2007, which is the highest title awarded in chess.
Subelj learned to play chess at the age of six from his father. He then played in his first tournament at the age of 7. He was part of the Slovenian national team at the European Youth Chess Championships and World Youth Chess Championship during the 1990s.
In 2006, Subelj achieved his first GM norm during a tournament in Pula, Croatia and his second norm in Novo Mesto, Slovenia in 2007. Subelj was granted the title of grandmaster by FIDE (the international chess federation) in November 2007 after securing his third GM norm in the closed grandmaster tournament in Otočec, Slovenia.
In 2009, he won the Slovenian Chess Championship, achieving a score of 7 out of 9. He has also represented Slovenia in two Chess Olympiads (2006 and 2008) and the European Team Chess Championship (2007). Subelj is also a university graduate with a degree in economics.
