Andrey Sumets is a Ukrainian chess Grandmaster from Kharkiv, Ukraine. He was born on April 29, 1980, and was awarded the International Master title in 2000, and the Grandmaster title in 2005. He was a member of the Ukrainian national team that won the gold medal in the 2004 U-18 World Team Chess Championship.
Sumets’ most notable successes include winning the European U-18 Chess Championship in 1999, tying for first place in the 1998 Ukrainian Junior Chess Championship, and sharing first place in the 2007 Cappelle-la-Grande Open Tournament in France. He was also joint winner of the 2009 Albena International Open tournament in Bulgaria.
Outside of his career as a professional chess player, Sumets is also a contributor to the chess magazine "64", a coach of the national team of the United Arab Emirates, and an author of several famous chess books. One of his books, "Winning the Won Game", was published in 2008 by the renowned publisher Gambit Publications.
