Summerscale has had a successful career in chess, both as a player and a writer. In the British Chess Championship, he achieved second place in 1997 and shared third place in 2000. In international tournaments, he has taken victories in places such as Denmark, the Isle of Man, and Spain.
As a writer, Summerscale has authored several books on the subject of Chess. His publications include "A Killer Chess Opening Repertoire," which he co-wrote with his ex-wife Claire Summerscale, and "Interview With a Grandmaster."
Summerscale has also taught chess, working as a trainer the King's Head Chess Club in London. He currently works in finance in addition to his chess-related pursuits. He has previously coached English Grandmaster David Howell.
