Andrew Tang is an American chess player who received his grandmaster title in 2018 from the World Chess Federation (FIDE). He was born on November 29, 1999, in Naperville, Illinois. He played in his first nationally ranked tournament in 2007 and became a national master in 2012. He achieved the level of International Master in 2014. Tang then went on to become the youngest ever American to defeat a Grandmaster in a standard time control game.
In addition to his competitive play, Tang is known for his online presence. He regularly streams games on Twitch and plays on Lichess, an online chess server, under the pseudonym "penguingm1". Andrew Tang is particularly known for his Bullet and Ultrabullet chess skills, which are a format of very rapid online play.
Tang won the Pro Chess League championship in 2017 with the Saint Louis Arch Bishops and later played for the Minnesota Blizzard. He has also competed in several World Youth Chess Championships. In 2014, he won the Pan American Youth Chess Championship in the U16 category. He has also competed in the United States Chess Championship and in 2019, he tied for 2nd place in the Foxwoods Open.
