Leonid Totsky is a Ukrainian chess player who earned the title of International Master in 1994 and the subsequent title of Grandmaster in 1996. He was born on April 4, 1971 in Nizhyn, Ukraine and has since primarily competed within Ukraine, being named Ukrainian Champion in 1995.
In 1997, Totsky hit his highest ever ranking on the FIDE World Ranking List being 123rd. Besides his achievements as an individual chess player, he also served as a second (i.e. helper) for Ukrainian Grandmaster Ruslan Ponomariov in 2002, when Ponomariov became the FIDE World Chess Champion.
In his chess career, Totsky largely used the Sicilian Defence, the Spanish Game and the Four Knights Game openings when playing with black and the English Opening when playing with white. He took breaks from his chess career multiple times; however, he made a return to competitive play and to the FIDE World Ranking List in 2021.
