Jorden Van Foreest is a Dutch chess Grandmaster. Born on 30 April 1999, he hails from a noble family that has produced several prominent chess players. He became an International Master in 2014, and then a Grandmaster in 2015.


The most notable achievements in his chess career are his victories at the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament. He first won it in 2016, receiving the title of youngest Dutch Chess Champion. He triumphed again in 2021, beating world number 1 Magnus Carlsen and few others to win the tournament.


Van Foreest earned a considerable reputation due to his exceptional skill as a player. Among several other titles, he won the Dutch Championship in 2016, the Groningen Chess Festival in 2015 and the HSG Open in 2016. He also won the European Youth Chess Championship u14 in 2013 and the U-16 European Youth Chess Championship 2015.


Though with a brief time in his career, Van Foreest had Albin Countergambit named after him. He is the first Dutch player to have an opening named after him, the Van Foreest Attack.


Van Foreest studied at the University of Groningen in the period between his championships. He began a degree but decided to focus instead on chess.


Besides playing chess, Van Foreest is known for creating a chess-based networking site, Chessratings.top, where players around the world can compare and track their ratings.
