Raised in the Netherlands, he excelled in the game from an early age, entering the world of professional chess in his teens.

Van Kampen's notable achievements in the timeline of his career include when he won the Dutch Youth Championship in the U10 category in 2003 and later in the U12 category in 2004, where he went on to win the Dutch Junior Championship (U20) twice in a row in 2010 and 2011. He was a Grandmaster in 2011.

He was part of the Dutch team in the Mitropa Cup in 2009 and 2010 and the European Team Championship in 2011 and 2013. In 2013, he won the London Chess Classic Super Rapid Open with a score of 9.5/10. Van Kampen went to University College Utrecht and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 2018. He then announced his semi-retirement from competitive chess, noting that he wouldn't be participating in tournaments anymore, but would remain involved in the chess world with commentary, training, and streaming. He continues producing instructional videos based on Chess and provides guidance to the aspiring players.
