Petr Velička has participated in international tournament competitions since 1990. He played in the 2007 Chess World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, but was eliminated in the first round. He has also competed in various European championships.

Velička's significant accomplishments include winning the Czechoslovak championships in 1991, the FIDE World Senior Championships in 2018, and the European Senior Championships in 2019.

Despite his achievements, some of Velička's accomplishments have been marred by controversy, including suspicions of cheating during some of his games. In September 2020, 62 chess grandmasters signed a petition accusing Velička of cheating and requested his disqualification from senior tournaments. However, no conclusive evidence was found.
