Vila Gázquez has won a number of chess tournaments throughout his career. Notably, he triumphed at the Figueres Open in 1998, 2000, and 2001, and at the Open International de Cappelle-la-Grande in 2002. Other victories include the Magistral Ciutat de Barcelona round-robin tournament in 2001 and 2008.
In addition, Vila Gázquez has represented his country in multiple Chess Olympiads. He played for Spain at the 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin in 2006, where he achieved an individual score of 6.5/9 points. He has also competed in the European Team Chess Championship several times.
