Sergey Volkov is a Russian chess grandmaster, who was born on 7th June 1974 in Saratov, Russia. He obtained the International Master (IM) title in 1998 and was awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2000.
Volkov is known for his significant victories and outstanding performance in various chess tournaments. He was the winner of the 2000 Russian Chess Championship and also the Aeroflot Open in 2008. Besides, he secured the second spot at the Aeroflot Open in 2003 and also at the Russian Chess Championship in 2001. He was bestowed with the gold medal at the 2012 World Senior Championship.
Notably, Sergey Volkov took part in the FIDE World Chess Championships several times. He performed exceptionally well during the 2004 Championship, when he reached the quarterfinals. He also participated in the 2005 and 2007 Chess World Cup, but couldn't make it to the final rounds.
Additionally, Sergey contributed remarkably as a team player. He represented Russia in the 1995 Under-26 World Team Championship and helped the team secure the gold medal. In the 2003 European Club Cup, he bagged a team silver and individual bronze while playing for Chess Club Alkaloid.
