Adjournment

An adjournment is the suspension of a chess game with the intention of completing it at a later time. Historically, tournament games were regularly adjourned after a set number of hours or moves, with the player whose turn it was to move writing their next move in a sealed envelope (a sealed move). The players and their seconds could then analyse the position during the adjournment period. The practice has been largely abandoned in modern chess because powerful chess engines can be used to analyse adjourned positions, undermining the integrity of the resumption. Today, most serious games are played to completion in a single session using faster time controls.
