Chess Terms : Amateur Explained
An amateur is a chess player who does not earn a living from playing or teaching the game. Amateurs range in strength from absolute beginners to near-professional level. The term carries no pejorative connotation—many strong club players and even those holding FIDE titles compete as amateurs. Historically, the amateur/professional distinction was more significant; in the 19th century, "amateur" denoted a gentleman player who played for pleasure rather than prize money.
