Chess Terms : Automaton Explained
A chess automaton is a device or machine that appears to play chess automatically. The most famous example is the Turk, constructed by Wolfgang von Kempelen in 1770, which was presented as a chess-playing machine but was actually controlled by a hidden human operator. The concept of chess automata has historical significance as a forerunner of modern chess-playing computers and artificial intelligence.
